Dutch Queen Beatrix charmed by Paverpol statue!
|
For a visit of Queen Beatrix to Makkum on April 30 - 2008, the city of Wûnseradiel in the province of Friesland, gave the assignment to build a huge statue. They chose to make a sea monster that in the history of Friesland plays a big part. The story starts far before BC with the mystical sea monster named Narf. The monster gets ashore in the province of Friesland (the Netherlands) after a huge battle between the Northern Gods and their enemies the Giants. Narf was the pet of one of the Giants and was able to escape beauce of a huge wave. Once ashore in Friesland he is used to defend the coast against pirates. For this assignment they chose to work with Paverpol because they had to make the construction with the help of children and he had to be rain and wind resistant.

The skeleton was made out of wood and chicken wire which was covered in sheets with Paverpol. After it dried they paibnted it with acryl paint. From the hangar in Pingjum, where Narf was made, he was driven on a big utility trailer to Makkum. The Queen was charmed by this huge but friendly looking monster. Narf will stay outside for the rest of this summer at the biological garden centre Ferskaat, next to the tea farm Nije Trije, Nesserlaan 4a in Pinjum. A great attraction for visitors!
