How Paverpol changed my life!

Brenda Topley makes an art piece for an auction for the "Equestrian for the Disabled"

We got a mail from Brenda Topley, a Canadian artist. And this is what she wrote:

Hi, I am Brenda Topley. I live with my husband Stewart in Red Deer, Alberta. We both like sculpting and painting. Now I make sculptures with Paverpol and I'm very exited about that product. When I was asked if I would make a piece to auction for the "Equestrian for the Disabled" I had no idea how it was about to change my life.

I started thinking of the piece and I was compelled to go the centre and see for myself. Being there and
seeing those children inspired me. Their strength and courage is wonderful.

I started to draw what was in front of me: children and horses. I saw the broken bodies with the pure hearts,
full of love, and complete on the inside. When they are on those horses, they are complete and whole. Leaving behind all their disabilities.

Back home I started to make a child riding on a horse. I used my favourite material: Paverpol. While making the piece I was reminded of my own
son who had to be in a wheelchair for two years and had crippling problems for eleven more years. He is now forty with a child of his own. I asked
him about the cruel remarks that people made of him.

He said it never bothered him because he was always treated with love and no difference than other family members at home. That is how I saw those children, no different.

When we went to the auction, I was hoping to raise a modest amount of money to help the centre. Danny Hooper, he is a radio announcer, a
cowboy and an all round nice guy, was the auctioneer at the fund raiser for the equestrians. Standing at the front and getting the bid of 500 dollar I thought that was terrific and it would help. Then Danny said he was not accepting that amount. My heart sank. What did he mean?

Danny has a wonderful talent and truly knows how to help people. He said he was going to sign the
back of my piece and bid 100 dollar. How many more would do the same?
The next few minutes were a blur as I watch all the hands go up! Danny had raised 4.300 dollar for the centre!!

It was such a humbling experience to realize I could make a difference with my art.

I thank Danny and I will keep doing my art always with love and good intention.

1st Paverpol Award in USA!

Last April Jan and I were invited by our importer to come to New York to give a master class workshop to educated C.P.I.'s (Certified Paverpol Instructors). Among these C.P.I.'s were a couple of well known artist who also made some art pieces which were up for showing in the Pen & Brush Gallery, New York. Jan and I were invited to visit this gallery. I had the honor to hand out the award, made by myself, to the artist who made the most beautiful piece of art.

It wasn't easy, I can tell you that. Our jaws dropped literally when we looked at all these amazing art pieces. Piece by piece they were just beautiful.

But we had to make a choice and eventually I chose a wall panel made by an artist named Morgan Elser from Delavan - Illinois.

The exposition was a great success since quite some art pieces were sold as well that evening.

The idea for a Paverpol Award came from our American importer. Thanks Christa! Because it was such a huge success we are planning to do this every year from now on. At the same time we had the idea to award a Paverpol Award to the artist who made the most beautiful, original or most meaningful Paverpol Art Piece for our internet-gallery.

We do receive so many beautiful photos and we decided to do something with that. Everyone can join even with more then one art piece/photo. In the Paverpress of January 1, 2009 we will let you know who will get the Paverpol Award. It's an exclusive statue made by Jossy de Roode.

Join now and win this exclusive award!

"THE CIRCLE IS CLOSED", Dick d'Agostino emails from Baltimore USA. "I've worked for magazines, daily newspapers and television for years. But the higher I got in my career, the further I drifted from my actual passion: working with new materials and developing new art forms. After a period of not knowing what to do, I decided to go for it and I quit my good, lucrative management position.

I hunkered for new challenges and I couldn't wait to get started. I started looking for new materials that would work great with my creative ideas. Under supervision of Amanda Degener, Dick took a couple of courses focusing on working with paper. He really liked the material and started making paper sculptures. In the United States they don't appreciate these types of sculptures and Dick felt it as a challenge to change that. He made two types of art, the paper sculptures and a special type of light fixture sculptures made of thin, transparent paper.

He designed a website where those who are interested can see how he makes those sculptures. He shows how to build different types of skeletons en which techniques to use. Dick loves to share his experience. It gives him a feeling of satisfaction that his website is often visited. In the past years he had visitors from 45 countries! For the light fixture sculptures he uses bulbs of 6 W. Several materials like wire mesh, reed, styrofoam and castings are being used in order to make these skeletons. He always tries to make sculptures that won't show the skeleton. And that's a challenge!

Christa Light, president of Paverpol North America, the company that imports Paverpol to the USA, noticed the website of Dick and pointed him into the direction of Paverpol. Dick started experimenting with Paverpol transparent. He was so enthousiastic that Paverpol is now a regular ingredient for making his sculptures for which he uses transparent paper. He even made a 1.5 meter high sculpture, Calle Lilly (photo) on a skeleton of chicken wire and Paverpol! The succes he had with this sculpture inspired him to make new sculptures in different shapes. Birds, fish, flowers, etc.

Coming May and June 2008, three years after his introduction to Paverpol, Dick will have an exposition in The Pen & Brush Gallery, New York and The Harmoney Hall Gallery, Washington DC. Obviously he hopes that these expositions will help make more artists enthusiastic for this type of art, for example art paper sculptures made with Paverpol.

Dick has a C.P.I. certificate, and is an instructor as well. He manages workshops in Baltimore and gives demonstrations at creative shops in the USA and Canada. He's very satisfied with his new way of living and hopes through his website and workshops to get more people interested in his art style. Beside being a wonderful paper artist he also loves the art of living!

Because of Paverpol I got rid of my weight problem!

"As a kid I use to be over weight. My father used to own a bakery and (often) there were 'yummy' leftovers. I think that the first couple of years were the years that did set my weight. But I was a happy, 'jolly' girl.
No worries for me."

She continues: "I haven't been 'worry-free' obviously. Just like everyone else I did have my share of ups and downs as well. But by nature I'm an optimistic person. My husband and I love living the life. We're not rich, meaning money but our children are healthy and we have a good marriage. So, in our eyes we're rich. We both love good food en without noticing it we gained too many kilo's in the last 15 years. I've tried several weight loss programs, and lost some weight but gained it again. Sometimes even more! Two years ago I had it with all the weight loss programs and decided that I would never try any weight loss program again.

At my weekly get-to-gether with my girlfriends (we paint and clay together), I overheard one of them talking about Paverpol. We all got curious and decided to buy a jar of Paverpol to try it out. We did find a work description in a hobby magazine and made a beautiful statue from an old t-shirt. I was sold! This is a great technique! Through the website I learned more about Paverpol, bought some materials and got hooked to making statues.

I've probably made about 40 statues in the last one and a halve years. I give them away as a gift and every now and then I sell one. When working with Paverpol you not only forget the time but also forget to eat all the goodies! Really, I just loose myself into it when I'm working with Paverpol and (almost) forget everything around me. Even a cup of coffee that my husband made for me is often getting cold.

And the beauty of it all: without much effort, I've lost 12 kilo's in one year! Just by not eating all the sweets. I will never be thin but I feel so much better right now and more healthy. There's one problem though, to stay at my current weight I have to continue making Paverpol statues! I find it a luxury problem because I will continue with this great hobby!

Bye for now and creative greetings from Coby Spruit.

"My daughter-in-law owns a ladies clothing store and she wanted penguins in her window space. Since she knows I'm handy, she asked me to make them for her." Ellie van Hengel, born in Brabant and currently living in Rotterdam, is telling her story. "I can't sya 'no', so I started right away. Without having an example or looking at any images of penguins I started to design the skeletons first and then the wings with electrical wire. For the final shape I used aluminum foil and paper towels. I had to use a lot because the penguins are quite big.

Then I used pieces of fabric, dipped it into the Paverpol and layed it on top of the foil. When it was dry I made a mix of Paverpol and Art Stone and put that on top. On top of that anothe layer of Paverpol and finally I used glitters for the 'ice' effect. The penguins are attached to a piece of concrete by pur which make it look like their standing in the snow. I think they look even better in real then on the picture. Isn't it nice?

A few months ago my daughter had to let her cat put down to rest. She asked me if I could make a statue of a cat for her.

And ofcourse 'our mom' (as they say in Brabant where I'm from) will do that. Not to pet myself on the back, but somehow it always works out for me. I come up with the designs myself although it will take me days sometimes before I have the right one in mind.

I've made the cat out of clay but also according to the Paverpol method: first make a skeleton.

Working with Paverpol is giving me a lot of pleasure. Because my hands are constantly busy it's better for my arthritis. When I'm working with Paverpol I don't hear or see anything around me anymore. And that helps me to forget about my illness at least for awhile. I hope I can continue doing this for many years to come since I can put a lot of myself into it.

Make-up discovers Paverpol!

Liz Ciesluk is working for over 30 years in the Canadian movie and entertainment industry. A lot of celebrities are turned into beauties because of her, or turned into scary people since she's also a special make-up artist for Opera and Musical stars. But that's not the end of it because she designs and produces decors, wigs, illustrates fairy tale books, has her own postcard brand and makes beautiful dressed dolls and phantasy sculptures, and much more artsy works, too much to mention here.

We met this artistic, modest woman at a workshop for instructors in Calgary, Canada. She told us that she also works with paper mache and clay but she thinks that Paverpol gives her so much more opportunies. She was one of our most enthusiastic students that didn't needed any encouragement. Because of her artistic talent, the most creative figurines are taking shape when she's working. Her creations are all hand made en unique. She starts every figurine with shaping a face. Glass blown eyes from Germany are giving the figurines and dolls a 'real' effect. She paints them by using different painting techniques. Even the techniques from the old masters! She uses acryl paint or make-up.

She's using a lot of different types of textile and Paverpol is giving her so much inspiration and new opportunities. Raw silk is one of het favorites. This is easy to harden with Paverpol. She also uses a lot of old fashioned natural fabrics. Her figurines and sculptures are usually decorated with natural materials, eg. moss, leafs, flowers, etc. It usually took her more then 100 working hours per project, but she is convinced that she can work faster using Paverpol, because it dries faster. In her spare time, Liz gives workshops with Paverpol which she does with heart and soul.

We wish her luck and looking forward to her new Paverpol creations!

A wonderful Christmas because of Paverpol!

""The year 2007 is the year I like to forget as soon as possible", says Vera Janssen (39). "This last year I got divorced and had to take care of our two children which are 8 and 10 years old by myself. Beside the fact that you are depressed about the divorce, it's also hard to live off one salary when you're used to a double income...

Fortunately I have a rental home and with some financial help I am able to stay in our home. This way the children can stay in their own environment and at their own school.

After the divorce, my best friend gave me a book about how to make art with Paverpol and a jar of Paverpol with it. She wanted to cheer me up but I could not find the energy to do something with it. There is so much happening after a divorce. You need all your energy to stay focused and to give the children as much attention as possible.

I was doing allright, but was not looking forward to Christmas at all this year. I did not have a lot of money for presents. I did buy a season ticket for both my children. My son plays soccer and my daughter learns 'street dance'. I couldn't spend any more money. But the jar of Paverpol and the book caught my eye and it gave me an idea.

From an old t-shirt, some bird wire and aluminum foil I made a small statue for my mom and my daughter. I did paint it with acryl paint and was pretty proud of myself when I saw the end result.

My son has a favourite stuffy that went to bed with him for a long time. He's getting to big for that but can't take any distance from it either. So, I used Paverpol to make the stuffy into a statue and it got a special place in his room.

My presents were succesful and I was happy that I was still able to do something extra for the dearest people around me.

Thanks to Paverpol the year ended better then expected!"

Diana Schuite, 44 years young, started making 3-Dimensional art in 1986 with statues and caracter dolls with Fimo and Chamotte clay. She also designed abstract statues and paintings.

But Diana was still searching for the perfect materials. She expanded her education with 'raku stoken', art in clay, 'speksteen' and oil and acryl painting.

At "The Art and Culture Centre " in Zoetermeer, she got introduced to Paverpol. After that she took the instructors course at Atelier Josefine where she got noticed right away because of her talent. She finally found the right material and started to give courses herself in making statues with Paverpol. She has done that for the last five years and had a lot of fun doing it. It was the right basic knowledge she needed to get to where she is today: an artist.

She's very proud of what she has accomplished (and us too!). She got invited to do an exposition in a well known gallery. Her stylish figurines all have the perfect shape and lines and the soft color combinations are beautiful. Her work is done in perfection. Diana: "Paverpol is perfect to shape and reshape and harden my art pieces. I'm more then satisfied about the durability and all the possibilites of Paverpol".

If you like to see some of her statues and paintings on canvas with relief then you can visit 'Galerie Art in Home' in The Hague, www.artinhome.nl.

We are proud that Paverpol has helped her to get where she is today, a true professional artist.

We like to wish Diana more success and beautiful art!

Life size science fiction costumes made with Paverpol!

Kevin Tangelder and Melchior ten Hoopen are two young guys and best friends. They love to play the table top strategy game "Warhammer 4000" from the Gameworkshop. Their age group will likely know what they are talking about.

The game is being played with miniatures, dressed in beautiful science fiction costumes. The figures of the game inspired them to make the
costumes for real, but in a way that they would fit them themselves!

Their first thought was to make the costumes from fibre glass, but that turned out to be very expensive.

A garden statue from Kevin's mom gave the solution to their problem, make the costumes out of Paverpol. Jolanda Tangelder had made the garden statue a couple of year agon at a Paverpol course. Since it has been outside for a couple of years and still in great shape they decided to start working with Paverpol.

They made the costumes in a shed of Melchior's home. The wooden skeleton was filled with PU-material. After that they dipped fabric into Paverpol and put on top. When fully dried they started painting.

The costumes turned out beautiful! For the insiders among us, based on "Space Marines" from the chapter "Black Templer". In Holland they were already invited to walk around in their costumes on a 'Game' exhibition. ANd for the non-insiders among us; the photos are telling the story!

Thanks, Kevin en Melchior!

"I got familiarized with Paverpol Textile Hardener about 2 years ago. I couldn't wait to create something with it and that's how "Anders" was born. A boy figurine who's placed in front of our school to welcome the children every morning." Annette Larsen, a teacher at 'Skibet' Elementary in Vejle, Denmark, is telling this story.

"Because of my profession I had to visit an exhibition for hobby materials. That's where I got to know Paverpol. A textile hardener that's safe for kids since it's evironment friendly. It has the AP safety logo on all the jars. After they explained all the possibilities of Paverpol I wanted to create something with my kids at school using Paverpol. The children are between 6 and 8 years old.

I thought of 2 subjects tht the kids would like, 'Vikings' since it's a big part of our culture and the boys would really like that and animal figures. Favourite with the girls are the turtles and fish.

We made the skeletons and swords of aluminum wire and shaped and filled them up with aluminum foil. We attached the foil with painters tape and put the first layer on with Paverpol. The kids worked on it for 4 hours. We let the art pieces dry and the next day they painted an decorated them. That took about 2-3 hours.

I've made pictures of all the kids with their own piece of art. They turned out so beautiful! There are also photos of how we made the art pieces. If you're interested, you can get my email address through josefine@planet.nl.

The kids and I had a lot of fun working with Paverpol!

"Everyone calls me Auntie Annie, since they all know me here in the village. I've lived here my whole life, and never moved. When I got married, we moved in with my parents because of the housing shortness. And well, that's the way it was. My parents passed away at a relatively young age one right after the other. The house was big enough for my family. And when the kids left home, my husband and I had more than enough space for our hobbies."

"My husband loves to fix up old cars. And I love everything that is creative." When Annie Schouwenaar (79) is telling her story there's no stopping her. She loved to do creative things with her children, usually in the barn, since there was no space in the house. She knitted little socks, sweaters and hats for newborns and made all kind of things for charities.

Annie is a very healthy woman although walking is getting a bit harder nowadays. But to be creative and make artwork is still an important part of her life. She makes beautiful postcards and jewelery, she still likes painting and 2 years ago she dicovered Paverpol.

"I've never heard of it, but one of my friends had made a beautiful statue at the senior club. I couldn't believe that she made it herself, because it looked so professional! That's when I got curious. I wanted to do that too! My granddaughter ordered a starters kit for me on the Internet. Then, I started working at the kitchen table. I thought it would be a big mess but that wasn't the case at all. I had put a plastic sheet on the kitchen floor and protected the table but the description said that I shouldn't use it too wet.

In the beginning I thought it was a bit of a hassle, but that changed quickly since you can see the result almost immediately. My first Paverpol statue looked good already! With a couple of neighbours we started a Wednesday afternoon 'creative get-to gether'. At first we just got together for coffee but it is more fun to talk and do something with your hands at the same time. They wanted to make a Paverpol statue as well so I teached them how to do that. We don't make huge statues, just small ones to give away as a present. Together we've made a number of small statues for the street fair of our church. The money was given to charity.

I also use Paverpol to decorate my postcards. I make about a 100 cards a year. In August I start with making Christmas cards. I don't buy expensive materials. I cut the design I need out of old curtains, rub them in with Paverpol and let them harden. When dry, I paint them or I sprinkle glitters on top. Then I glue them on a card and have something original."

Annie has a lot of other examples and we might get back to you on that another time.

We don't want to withold her last comment: "By being creative I keep my mind young since there's always a new challenge. You won't see me sitting inside - just looking outside."

Reunited because of Paverpol!

"We were best friends since we were little. I can't even remember when we met for the first time. We were neighbours and in that time all the kids in the neighbourhood were playing together outside. Back in the 50's there weren't that many cars on the roads yet. We had one neighbour in our street who owned a car. So, there was enough space for the children to play outside. And there were always children to play with. I preferred to play with Jenny."

This story is told by Jose (59): "It was a wonderful time. As I remember it, we were always playing outside and the sun was always shining. The part I miss the most is that we didn't had anything to worry about. You don't realize it at that age but to me it was the most 'worry free' time of my life.

We were allowed a lot of things at our home. Friends were always welcome to come and play and when we were playing hide-'n-seek my parents often joined us. It was a lot of fun! At Jenny's home it was the opposite. Her mother was a great home maker. Everything was as clean and shiny as could be. So, there weren't many kids allowed at her home. That's why Jenny loved to be with us. I'm from a large family and you were expected to help out once in awhile. And Jenny got her fair share as well. Doing grocery shopping, the dishes, cleaning the diaper of my baby sister, etc. My parents called her 'their seventh child'. We grew up together and shared laughter and sorrow together. Although there wasn't much sorrow at that time but when girls are growing up a pimple on their nose can be a big problem.

If we wanted to go to the movie theatre then we put our allowance together. This way we just had enough money to buy two cheap tickets. We loved the movies with Cliff Richard or Elvis. It was the time of pettycoats and we were wearing shoes with heels (Queenies) for the first time. And don't forget our nylon stockings. Listening to music on a turn table and in the summer we biked to the beach.

But little girls are growing up and we both went to another school, got different friends and we drifted apart. We both got married, had kids, moved to another city and were busy taking care of our families. We totally lost contact but never forgot about each other as we found out years later.

When my children were all grown up and on their own I got time for myself again. My biggest hobbies are painting, working with clay and making dolls. I took several courses and at one of them I learned how to make a garden statue with Paverpol. I also learned that you are able to paint with Paverpol. This way I was able to dress up my elegant dolls by hardening their clothes. WOW, that was a new experience and the best part is that I can combine all three of my hobbies.

Currently I give workshops with Paverpol. We converted unused space in our house into a workshop and it's a great way to teach others how to work with Paverpol. I love my students and over the years made some good friends.

Last year my husband and I were on vacation. Close to our campground was a street fair, one with all kinds of art made and sold by artists. I noticed this little booth with statues made of Paverpol. I had to take a look! The statues were beautiful but my jaw dropped when I saw my best friend Jenny behind the table. As it turned out, she found out about Paverpol as well and started working with it. What a surprise! Immediately we made an appointment for that evening to get together at her place which was close to our campground. The evening was too short to catch up on all the years that we missed. So, our visits became more frequent. Fortunedly our husbands can get along very well which makes it even better.

In the meantime a few years have passed and we are as close as we were when we were little. We just picked up where we left. Jenny and her husband Jaap are a part of our family now and although we're middle-aged, we're laughing and enjoying eachothers company as we did before.

Actually...thanks to Paverpol!

Artists around the world are working with Paverpol!

It started with some electrical wire, aluminum foil and an oldt-shirt. Jossy de Roode discovered Paverpol
and used these materials to make a garden statue. Her idea became a trend in the Netherlands and other countries...

At first, there were the hobbyists who discovered the possibilities of Paverpol. Today there are hundreds of artists around the world who are exploring working with Paverpol as well...

Paverpol can be used for numerous purposes. You can make big size artwork using Paverpol combined with glass fibre and it will remain light in weight.

Painters discovered Paverpol as well. One of them is selling his paintings in tropical countries. He uses Paverpol as a base. It becomes somewhat flexible in warm weather and that's why the paint won't crack. Isn't that smart?!

Set Decorators are very enthousiastic about Paverpol. In theatres and other places where they are using backdrops and sets that need to be changed often and quickly it's works great because they're light in weight. In one of our previous news articles we mentioned that the decoration-crew of Holiday On Ice is working with set pieces made from Paverpol!

They've designed big mushrooms from Paverpol, because they're light in weight, were easy to move around across the ice.

June Stephenson, an artist from England, did visit China and was fascinated by a beautiful Bonsai and rock garden. Back home she decided to make a garden like that. The only thing that needed to be added were the rocks. Since Paverpol can be used outdoors she made rocks from chicken wire, fabric and Paverpol. Now she's got a wonderful memory of her visit to China.

The many applications of Paverpol don't end here. Look at artist Richard D'Agostino from the USA. He makes beautiful light fixtures in all kind of forms and colors. You can find some photos of his designs in our Photo gallery.

Our list of Paverpol applications is virtually endless. For more - look out for the next issue of PaverPress.

Paverpol saved our vacation!

"A Vacation! To me that means:: sunshine, being lazy, going out for dinner, not thinking about work, or getting the kids to school, and all the daily things that make life so hectic sometimes".
Jolanda is 37 year old, married, and has 3 children...

"I work part time at a day care and help with reading at the school of my youngest son. The sport activity locations of our children are far apart. And of course they all do different things. Our oldest son plays soccer, our daughter is doing street dance and our youngest is learning Judo. My husband and I sometimes feel like a Taxi company when we have to bring them to their sports and pick them up again.

Our oldest is allowed to go to a dancing on Saturday night but we always pick him up ourselves. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I feel privileged with three healthy children and a wonderful husband.

The only thing my life is lacking of every now and then is to have some time for myself. Ever since I was young I love to do creative things. I still have the first doll I've ever made and I will keep it for the rest of my life. I make dolls with self hardening clay, dress them up with fabric which I harden with Paverpol. I've got quiet a collection by now since I don't sell them. My husband encouraged me to start my creative hobby again when the kids started school. But, it did not work out the way I hoped it would since I simply don't have the time. That's why I always take some hobby materials with me when going on vacation. My husband and children love to be on the water doing boating, fishing or swimming. And I'm not such a swimmer and like to have that time for myself to do some creative work in our trailer.

We like Spain a lot and when we go there, we ususally have great weather. But last year we weren't that lucky. While Holland (where we live) had beautiful summer weather we experienced lots of rain and low temperatures. The kids were really getting grumpy after a couple of days.

You probably guessed that I did bring my hobby materials and I asked them if they wanted to help me out. I let them make a small figurine. They've made a small fairy, Superman and an unclear but funny looking animal.

Our kids made some friends during that vacation and they were getting curious and wanted to know what we were doing. They were bored as well and asked me if they could join us. I got this idea and asked the owner of the campground if I could use the cafetaria with the kids to make some creative arts. He allowed this and there I was entertaining fourteen children! The adults wanted to give it a try as well so the next day it was their turn. Despite the bad weather we had a wonderful time thanks to Paverpol. Luckily we had two weeks of sunshine as well but we will never forget our Paverpol vacation".

Paverpol gave my life new meaning!

I thought of myself as what they call a 'Lucky', says Sylvia van Zwieten (41). It looked like everything was going so easy for me: a wonderful youth, a great school time and when graduated, a great job that really fitted me. I became a sales representative in a hobby materials store. As a child I loved to be creative so to work in that store was a blessing. I learned a lot about all the different materials and techniques. Quite often clients came in especially to ask for my advise. It was terrific and in no time I became manager.

After getting married I continued working until our first child was born. I became a freelancer for the hobby material store. Unfortunately our first born did not survive. A huge loss that had a enormous impact on our lives. But we managed toi pick up our lives and after 2 years I was pregnant again. Unfortunately I had a miscarriage and I was devastated again. After a while I thought I was pregnant again but it turned out that menopause started. I was only 37! How could that be?! It seemed that my desire to become a mother would never come tue.

In the same year my mom past away AND my marriage was ending. I became very depressed and thought I would never recover from all this. It was impossible to work, I just didn't have the energy. My depression lasted for about 3 years. After the advise of my physician I went to a support group and recovery began. I was able to tell my story to someone and I listened to what others had to say. I was not the only one in the world with problems. Because that's what you start thinking when the world around you becomes so small.
With one of the ladies of my group I underwent therapy. We did all kinds of creative things like working with clay, painting and drawing. At one point our leader mentioned that in our next meeting we would start working with Paverpol. We were so curious!

I know a lot of hobby materials but I never heard of Paverpol. We had to bring an old t-shirt and scissors to the next session.

The t-shirt needed to be cut up in strokes which were dipped in Paverpol and put around a wire skeleton. This way it was easy to design a statue. I was so proud! I just couldn't believe I made that! I wanted to continue working with Paverpol for sure.

When I came home I went on the Internet to find more information about Paverpol. And of course there was lots. I found information on how to take a course to become an Paverpol Instructor. I signed up right away. In 2 days I learned about all the things you can make with Paverpol. My corse ended with a receiving a certificate. I started working and made one statue after the other. My healing had started without me even knowing.

I sold my statues on little street fairs and got in contact with the owner of a hobby material shop who also sells Paverpol. He invited me to give demonstrations in his store every now and then which I really enjoy doing. I was back into the work force and earned a living again! Quite often clients thought I was an employee and asked me about all the other articles in the sore. Because of my experience I was able to help them out. The owner noticed my capabilities and asked me to work part-time in his store. Of course I wanted that and I knew I could handle it again.

At this point I'm working half days for over a year already and I feel great! Recently, my boss (single) invited me for dinner...

Thank you so much Paverpol!

I quit smoking because of Paverpol !

"When I was fifteen I had my first cigaret", that's how Anneke Meijer (48) start her story. "Ofcourse I had to do it secretly , my parnet s didn't smoke and told me often that it was bad for your health. But, hey, at that age everything your'e not allowed to do are the things you want to do. Especially when your friends are smoking. I found my first cigaret discusting, but it looked so cool!

Eventually my parnets found out and despite their wise advise I continued smoking. it started with a couple of cigarettes a day mainly at the school grounds. We had to be careful not to get caught bu one of the teachers since it wasn't allowed to smoke in or around school. At parties and trips we smoked a lot. Almost everybody smoked and I just din't wanted to be an outsider.

At a certain moment I realized that I had become a real smoker and I couldn't live without it. Addicted! Back then they didn't pay as much attention to it as nowadays. Ofcourse we knew it was bad but we looked at thoe people that had smoked their whole life and still made it to become 90. It was also allowed in most places like bars, cafe's, restaurants, etc. Even at work people smoked in if you weren't a smoker then unwillingly you smoked anyway. Not knowing back then that it was just as harmful.

I got married and my husband and many of our frineds smoked as well. After a birthday party the room was filled with blue smoke and we had to open all the windows to get the smell out of the house.

During my first pregnancy I stopped smoking and after my first one was born I haven't touch a cigaret either for some time. My husband tried as well but he couldn't do it.

Our marriage ended after 10 years and I had to continue alone with two small children. Becaus of all the stress and problemas I had I started smoking again.

I felt quilty towards my children.Especially when thye became teenagers. I had to give them the right example, right?! They thought cigarettes smelled. because they were too expensive at that time I smoked 'shag' and more then one package a week.

My first attempt to stop failed. I became so nervos and didn't know what to do anymore. until a good friend advised me to look for something that would distract me. She took me to a Paverpol workshop. From an old t-shirt and Paverpol we made a garden statue in just one day! IIt was amazing!

I had never made something creative with my hands that I could be proud of. But I showed my statue to all my friends and family. My mother asked to make her one as well. I bought some materials and started working at the dining table.

Paverpol is easy to remove from your hands. That's why I prefer to work without gloves. And with my hands covered in Paverpol I wan't able to lit a cigaret. I didn't even missed them when working with Paverpol! I knew that this was my change that quit smoking.

I admit, it wasn't always easy. But I did it! I've made a lot of stautes and gave them as gift to family and friends but the biggest gift of all I gave that to myself: clean lungs! I'm already 'smoke free' for 4 years!

Paverpol changing lives

Ankie and Kees Schouten (The Netherlands), both middle aged, sold their well running flower shop about 4 years ago. They worked for more then 30 years between 50 and 60 hours a week. A huge and satisfied customer base kept them busy to make beautiful centre pieces and to maintain a big assortment of plants and flowers. Besides their work they managed to make some time available to spend with their 3 children. Life was always busy! Keeping their store up to date, going to flower shows, twice a week a visit to the wholesaler and running their shop 5 days a week was a stretch sometimes, but never too much. After the first couple of years they were able to hire some employees. The shop had to keep up with all the new trends so they started to sell gift and decoration products. Also garden decorations were added to the range of products. Keeping up-to-date- was very demanding for both of them.

Ankie was reading in one of her magazines and encountered an article about Paverpol. To make garden statues from textile and Paverpol intrigued her. Together with her husband they took a workshop and they were very enthusiastic because the possibilities to combine this with their flowers and plants was enormous. When coming home, they started right away and made beautiful garden statues, but also statues for indoors. It became a huge success but they didn't had time to take any assignments.

When they were 55+ and the kids left the house they started thinking about selling their shop. They never had the opportunity to travel much and a decision was made. They moved from the city to a bungalow in a quiet town.

The first years they travelled a lot until they got grand children which they wanted to enjoy as well. So travelling became less. But... they didn't wanted to babysit only either. They missed having interaction with people their own age and because of their busy lifestyle, they never developed lots of friendships. For the first time in their lives they got bored. They started working with Paverpol again and created beautiful statues often in combination with a centre piece as gift for family or friends. People started asking to make something for them and before they knew it... they were quite busy again.

Now, they are selling their statues and decorations on art shows and to...flower shops - coming full circle! When traveling they are always on the look-out for new ideas and materials which they can combine with their statue designs. Being 'in the loop' again provided Ankie and Kees with many new relationships and friends.

Their lives are as busy and active as before!

Paverpol statue as computer cabinet!

Our Paverpol-team is used to a lot when it comes to what people design with Paverpol. But the following story really amazed us. Vincent Bul wrote us:

"I've used Paverpol lead color since it was exactly what I was looking for. The statue I created is made of chickens gauze covered with paper maché - to get it into the right shape.

Then I used a 100% cotton sheet, cut it also in the right shape and made the statue.

On some spots I've used light grey acryl paint to make it look more like real stone. The entire statue is covered with Paverpol, the bottom is made of wood and painted with Paverpol. Since wood is also a natural product, this works fantastic. In the foot is where the computer hardware is located.

In the statue itself is where the power-adaptor and hard disks are located.

It looks way better then I ever could imagine. Paverpol is great stuff to make figurines, statues and every shape you like."

Great job Vincent!

Huge Carnaval Figures made by Paverpol!

In mid February Carnaval starts in the Netherlands. Three days of dancing, singing, eating and drinking. In several villages people are building beautiful wagons for the parade with huge statues on top. Quite often they choose a theme. They're working on this project for almost a year, starting with making making drawings and miniature samples. The tasks are divided and they start working in big buildings that can fit the wagons with statues when finished...

The shape is made out of clay. When finished they rub it in with vegetable oil. Big pieces of glass fibre are dipped into the Paverpol and put on top of each other onto the oiled clay. When totally covered it has to dry and harden. The time it takes depends on the temprature. The higher the temperature the faster it dries.

When the glass fibre has hardened it's cut into pieces and lifted from the figure, then put back together with glass fibre again and Paverpol. When has hardened again it's ready to be painted.

The huge figures are put onto the wagons and the parade is ready to go. It's really a pleasure for the eye. With pride we think by ourselves: Thanks Paverpol for making this possible.

Student supports creative workshops for the physically challenged!

Quite often we get vistors with a handicap. Especially for the physically challenged people in a wheel chair who are able to use their hands, a creative hobby is a great way to find fulfilment and relieve. But there are also people who are blind or who are (partly) deaf. For them it's a bit harder to have a creative hobby.

In England we had a woman visiting our booth who is almost fully blind. She asked us if she was allowed to touch the statues. The statues made with paverpol are as hard as rock and ofcourse that was no problem for us. She felt how they were made and with a little bit of direction from us she started working with Paverpol. We thought that was great. Often we have visitors who are deaf. Fortunedly Jan and I know sign language which, for them is a huge benefit that we can communicate with them. But to follow a workshop is not easy for deaf people.

During one of our grand stands we met a student who had seen us talking with a group of deaf people and asked us if we wanted to cooperate in a project. To finish her education she had to write a scription about creative support to disableds.

Especially deaf people had her interest and she was surprised to see that we know sign language.

Her plan is to make a DVD where step by step is explained how to make a statue with Paverpol and textile. Visual explanations supported by sign language. Ofcourse we like to be involved. She has to write a script first before we record a workshop on camera.

We think it's a great project and we'll keep you posted when the DVD is ready and available.

Cuddly toys on child's grave remain in good shape because of... Paverpol.

Last year, Suzanne and Kees de Boer of the Netherlands lost their daughter because of a tragic car accident. Little Isabella was only 4 years old. On the exact spot where the accident occurred, family members placed a wooden cross. Family and friends put flowers and cuddly toys around it. Naturally, Isabella's parents were devastated by the loss of their daughter but the support of their family and friends helped them through a very difficult time.

Everyday, many people were (and are) putting fresh flowers next to the wooden cross. After a while, the cuddly toys were looking a bit worn out, because of the weather. Kees' sister called us to ask if the cuddly toys could be treated with Paverpol to keep them in good shape. We never had this question before but advised her to let the cuddly toys dry and repair the damaged spots. Then use a brush to put the transparent Paverpol onto the cuddly toys. The first layer should dry before putting a second layer on.

They followed up on our advise and the result was amazing. Suzanne and Kees decided to treat all of Isabella's cuddly toys with Paverpol and put them next to her grave again. We all know that the pain of losing a child remains, but it gives them some comfort to see Isabella's favorite cuddly toys close to her in their original condition.

Because of the transparent Paverpol the cuddly toys will also keep their original color and won't get damaged, regardless of the weather circumstances.

Paverpol Plaque reunites villages after 40 years!

About 40 years ago, the A1 main road was "improved" through Yorkshire – the A1 goes all the way from London to Edinburgh. As a result, the new dual carriageway went through the middle of the village of Fairburn, splitting the community into two halves. For the planners in those days, traffic had priority over people.

However, the growth in traffic outgrew the "improved" road and a few years ago a further widening of the A1 was agreed. As part of this, the "new" A1 was to be redirected around Fairburn. This new road was opening in the Spring on 2006 and as a result, the two halves of Fairburn were reunited after some 40 years.

I used to live in Ledsham, the next village to Fairburn and still have many family and friends in that area. Through those contacts, I was commissioned to make a plaque to commemorate the reuniting of the village. I made it out of Paverpol.

The plaque is about a metre square. The design consists of two joined hands across the middle of the plaque, representing the rejoining of the village – these hands are in fact based on a cast I took of the hands of my daughter and her friend! Each quarter of plaque has a theme:

In the top left, Roman soldiers, representing the origins of the road (as the road was originally built by the Romans).
In the top right, a Victorian horse drawn bus
In the bottom left, early motor car
In the bottom right, the modern era, represented by a Mini Cooper.

The plaque was put on to an aluminium backing, to strengthen it, then coated with silk soaked in Paverpol . It was then bronzed (using gold acrylic paint) and coated completely in resin, to further strengthen it. Finally it was put into a wooden frame with a Perspex cover, to protected it from potential damage from vandals. A long process!

It stands in a small memorial garden.

There was a ceremony to unveil the plaque in March 2006. This involved many people from the area and the children from the village school, as well as the local brass band. I was asked to unveil the plaque – which I did with great pride.

Whilst I hugely enjoyed making the plaque, it did take very many hours of work, and I am not looking for any similar commissions – I will stick to more tradition Paverpol figures!

A colorful snake for hospitalized children!

A huge snake!

One of the things that makes our work so rewarding is meeting people with a passion. Talking to someone who has wonderful ideas is really very inspiring. One of those people is Gerda, a Dutch nurse who works with children in a Dutch children -hospital. Her work is very labor intensive. That's why she was looking for some kind of hobby to wind down. She took one of our workshops and she turned out to be a very talented student.

Right now she's producing beautiful Paverpol statues, and has had an exposition in the entrance hall of the hospital where she works. And with success! Practically all her statues were sold. With the money she earned she bought the material she needed to spice up the boring hospital rooms of her small patients. Now... Gerda had this great idea and asked us for help how to utilize it. She wanted to make a huge colorful snake that had to go from room to room.

Because her department has 6 rooms it had to be a very, very long snake but also light in weight because it had to be attached to the ceiling. We advised her to buy a role of chicken wire and gather old cotton sheets.

That last part wasn't a problem since her co-worker had a bunch of those because nobody in the hospital was using them anymore. The chicken wire needed to be cut in pieces of one and a half meter and then she had to roll them into the shape of a cilinder. The sheets were torn into long pieces. Gerda started to color the Paverpol with Pavercolor. She mixed 4 buckets, each one in a bright happy color: red, yellow, blue and green. Then she dipped the cotton into the Paverpol and wrapped it around the cilinders. It was a huge, but fun-job!

After the cilinders were dry, Gerda and her friends brought them to the hospital where she attached them part by part, hanging to the ceiling from room to room.

Gerda: It was an incredible job but seeing the happy faces of those little patients made it more than worth it!
